Description

Hey everyone, finally a new series from me! Both in color and black and white, this series showcases the Biltmore Estate located in Asheville, NC. Built in 1895, it is America's largest home, a chateau, visit their website. Keep looking back here for more from the series! (I even got pictures inside the house, even though photography isn't allowed, shh!)

This specific photograph was taken on a veranda outside the library area. The scenery was just exquisite and had to capture both the nature and architecture in this shot. Crits always welcome!

Cheap Automatic Canon Camera w/no focus/exposure settings
Cheap Kodak film
Scanned w/Nikon CoolScan
Color corrections made in PS CS
(yeh, still no digital camera)

Nice shot, good composition! I think that the architectural part is too dark though.... you should edit it ;)

wow lovely!
it looks like a view from a castle in antasy world, really luuuv the athmosphere
i think the part that the building is dark is good, it makes you look at the view outside.

This surely has a magical mood! Very beautiful! This could be almost be consider a snapshot, because you used a point and shoot camera, cosidering that I give you a +10/10 Because your eye was great to capture, the angle, light as it was... Great Job!

Wow...I haven't been to the Biltmore Estate in a loooong time....great opportunity for photos.

I'm thinking a levels adjustment may help this one out though...unless this was just an experiment in the relations of pos/neg space...

wysiwyg: I like using contrast between lights and darks, in composition and with the overall feel. I wanted the landscape to somewhat come out of the darkness. Since I was using a HORRID camera (almost as bad as a disposable) and could not specify anything, I couldn't get the incredibly mistiness of the setting. So I changed the atmosphere into one that was dark on the veranda and light everywhere else. The levels were changed quite a bit, by hand. The original negative was a little nasty and whatnot...considering, I think I did all that I could with this given that I wanted the architecture to be darker than the surroundings. :)

eh...it's bound to happen with any backlit subjects....high speed camera or crappy one..

well, thing is, I had a flash, but chose not to use it though ;) conscious decision... I knew the architecure would become dark because of that and I quite like feeling; the feeling of wanting to step out of it to go into the landscape. :)

You did a very good job with the high contrast lighting. This type of shot is always about exposure compromises even with a fully manual camera. Considering you used a point and shoot camera, the result is very good.

I like the contrast of the dark buildong against the bright outdoor....I do find very few colors....I think it would be nice to see it in BW....stilll very good picture!

Very good shot. The shadow shows details, that's a very good technique. If the small flash was added then it would of destroyed the mood.

well i like this. but it seems like the outside is overexposed and the inside is underexposed. reminds me of naboo in star wars episode 3. where amidala lives. ^_^ so yeah this is a cool setting, but it would be nicer with a bit diff ligthing. maybe if u had waited till sunrise or sunset u couldve gotten the inside a bit more illuminated and some cool lighting. cheers!
